BRC urges voters to confirm names, locations

THE Bougainville Referendum Commission (BRC) is urging voters on Bougainville to check their names on the preliminary referendum poll and confirm where they are to cast their votes.
Ward recorders are putting out the roll for inspection, correction and objection up to Sept 26.
Electoral Commission provincial offices will display the roll from Sept 11 to 20.
Chief referendum officer Mauricio Claudio called on Bougainvilleans to take ownership of the process.
“If you are eligible and want to vote in the November referendum, now is the time to check the roll,” he said.
“See your ward recorder or BRC official and help us create a credible, trustworthy referendum roll.” While the commission will provide provisional ballots to those voting in another location, people are advised to enrol in the location they plan to vote.
“Anyone on the final referendum roll will be allowed to vote,” he said.
“But to make sure your name appears at the polling centre you intend to vote at, now is the time to check and transfer.
“One of the key reasons the two governments provided a six-week extension was to allow for this three-week display in Bougainville and shorter periods outside the region.”
Claudio thanked the people working hard to make the enrolment of Bougainvilleans a success.
