The escape of detainee Kulupa Yabe from police custody last month will be investigated, Acting Metro Supt Joseph Salle said.

Yabe was wanted for serious crimes over the years until his capture in May, Salle said.

He was transferred to Port Moresby from Porgera for security reasons.

He was processed and sent to the Correctional Service facility at Bomana pending his court hearing.

After his court appearance, he was taken back to Bomana and then sent to Boroko because his remandee warrant had expired. He escaped from police custody, Salle said. Apparently, the officer escorting Yabe had changed shifts when the incident occurred, according to Salle.

“The investigation would determine if there was an administrative error, conspiracy involved or there was a misunderstanding with the officers on the shift,” he said.

This was not the first time this type of incident has occurred, there are also other cases, Salle said.

Meanwhile Joint Security Forces contingent commander Norman Kambo wants a full investigation into the escape and people responsible be dealt with, he said.
