SP committed to helping develop rugby league despite drop in revenue

SOUTH Pacific Brewery is continuing its sponsorship of the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League’s (PNGRFL) programmes for the remainder of the year despite “significant reduction” in the company’s revenue.
Brewery managing director Ed Weggemans’ announcement at the Oil Search National Football Stadium yesterday ensures continuity for the SP Hunters, Digicel Cup and the Port Moresby Rugby Football League, among other programmes.
“SP Lager’s continued support to PNGRFL during these difficult times demonstrates that our ongoing commitment to the growth of the code is in the best interest of Papua New Guineans who are involved in the sport,” he said.
“The decision is made at a time when our business is experiencing significant reductions in our revenue due to restrictions to trade (amid the Covid-19 pandemic).
“However, we stand committed to strengthening our relationship with our partners like PNGRFL.
“We should not forget that this great partnership has existed since SP Brewery’s inception in 1952.
“There is diversity and progress in rugby league in Papua New Guinea. We’re not only supporting the code or individual players but our communities.”
PNGRFL chairman Sandis Tsaka thanked the brewery for its continued support.
“This will definitely help us pursue our programmes,” he said.
“It will ensure that the SP Hunters’ campaign next year starts on the right foot as we transit with minimal disruption.
“PNGRFL is confident to deliver the sport to the people of PNG to achieve greater outcomes.
“The pandemic has brought us uncertainty and despite that, SP Brewery remains committed.
“We are inspired by the company’s commitment and that of our other stakeholders.”
