Bridge down, traffic cut
The National, Friday 13th of February 2015
TRAFFIC flow along the Kainantu section Eastern Highlands Province was disrupted by flooding which almost washed away the Bane Creek Bridge near Kainantu town.
The flood washed away the gabion baskets and material supporting the bridge, causing it to collapse.
Trexy Anakime, a public servant in Kainantu, said heavy rain on Tuesday night caused flooding which damaged the foot of the bridge.
“The bridge collapsed on one side, the vehicles cannot cross the bridge. Passengers had to walk across to catch a ride on the other side.”
He said if the rain continued, the bridge could be washed away.
Provincial Works department in Goroka sources said they would get the bridge repaired.
This is the second closure of the highway in two weeks. A huge landslide in Henganofi completely blocked the highway last week.
