THE lack of maintenance on bridges in the Daulo of Eastern Highlands is putting lives of people and motorists at risk, says a ward councillor.
Ward Two councillor Aviyo Teninge was commenting yesterday on the death of a man and his daughter early this month at a bridge.
The 67-year-old man was believed to have slipped and fallen through a hole in the Yamayo Bridge and carried away by floodwaters. His daughter who tried to help him was also swept away.
Teninge said roads and bridges needed to be fixed and kept in good condition to make travelling safe.
“The Yamayo and other bridges in the area needed to be fixed as soon as possible before more lives are lost,” Aviyo said.
“What has happened to the two is a wake-up call for the district authority to fix the bridges.”
Ward One councillor John Kamave said the bridges were built in the colonial era and needed to be maintained.
Kamave said the people were fed up of lip-service and wanted action by authorities.
“The timbers on the bridges at Yamayo, Gihoka and Langoroka have fallen off,” he said.
