Bring AFP in to help with investigations
The National, Wednesday September 18th, 2013
KUNDIAWA-Gembogl has lost a great man.
He is the late Peter Waieng, former minister for defence and MP for Kundiawa-Gembogl.
News reached his family that he was brutally murdered with multiple stab wounds to his body.
There are no clear indications of the motives behind his murder.
We are of the opinion that the suspect in custody now may have some information that he is withholding.
But we are also of the opinion that he may not be the prime suspect.
We could easily figure it out from his confession that he has definitely not played an active role in connection with Waieng’s death.
For a person of the size and intelligence of the late Waieng, the suspect would definitely not have even dared to get within close range to swing his knife if he ever had the opportunity to do so.
This brings us to say that it is evidently the work of a group of people who must have been known to Waieng.
The police investigators must not accept the lame excuses produced by the suspect in custody.
He may have been subjected to inducements or threats.
We do not want to undermine the work of the police investigation but it would be more reassuring we could have the assistance of the Australian Federal Police (AFP) in leading the investigation.
I urge Prime Minister Peter O’Neill to liaise with the Australian government and bring some experienced police from the AFP to run the investigations.
