Bring back discipline into public service

Letters

SOME public servants run around doing absolutely nothing during official working hours.
Absenteeism is a serious problem.
This slackness is happening under the very noses of their immediate bosses.
Government policies and programmes are not being implemented effectively because of undisciplined workers.
They have allowed compromises and undue influences interfere with their mandated duties and responsibilities.
Many public servants are running away from work because they have money-related problems which is affecting them psychologically.
Debt-ridden workers skip work because they have to get this money-related problem out of the way.
And the confrontation is usually between an unfaithful borrower and a nagging money lender.
The latter normally operates within the vicinity of the worker’s place of employment.
This money-related burden is exerting a strain on the worker’s performance in the workplace.
At most times the burden is self-inflicted.
A debt-ridden worker is very likely to deliver one year’s work every two or three years.
The government spends millions every two weeks to maintain the payroll of the public service.
Do we as a country gain a justifiable return on this huge government spending?
Given the present complacent attitude by Papua New Guinea’s workers, the government can cut down on its expenditure by reducing the size of the public sector workforce.
It is uneconomical for any government to spend so much on workers’ payroll when the workforce is under performing.
Discipline should be brought back into the public service.
The corrupt should be dealt with accordingly.
Elementary and high school teachers who continually run away from class should be put off the payroll and dismissed from the teaching service.
Provincial and district administration officials who are involved in corrupt dealings should be brought under the scrutiny of the relevant authorities and dealt with.
If we bring back discipline into the public service, the long term economic benefit is going to be huge.
