Broken roads, broken lights

Letters

Unitech Bumayong Road, I thank Lae MP John Rosso and the Government for the 3km road maintenance work done on the stretch from Unitech Main Gate to Bumayong.
The MP, according to The National on Aug 2, said the road will be sealed.
As a longtime resident of Lae, I know that this section of the road floods in the rainy season.
I don’t think tar-seal will do the job because of the flooding and I recommend the use of concrete slabs and pavement like that at PTC Road and Igam Barracks.
Firstly, get the drainage work in order before attempting anything else.
I appeal to the contractor, JVPNG Ltd, and the so-called DoW supervisors, to consider the following points.
If you are going to put in a solar lighting system along that road then my advice to you is that you should come up with better plans and strategies to prevent vandalism and damage.
Of the solar lighting installed in the past, only the poles are left standing.
The solar panels and batteries are long gone.
It is a shame and I blame the DoW supervisors for failing to do a good job.
Also it is high time that we Papua New Guineans come out of our stone-age mentality and start respecting public utilities which have been mostly given to us by donor countries.

P Nugu, Lae
