A BRAVE performance by Nane Brothers saw them defeat Niugini Online Dragons 17-14 in the Kaupa Cup grand final at the National Football Stadium yesterday.
The atmosphere was tense with hundreds of spectators from Moresby North-East who had been following the two Kaupa Cup competitions, Bomana and Unagi.
Brothers displayed outstanding attacking skills in the last 10 minutes, thanks to five-eighth Tasi Richard who scored their winning try when they were down 14-11.
Richard also kicked a crucial field goal.
The other stand-out Brothers player was Jeffrey Mark who received Bomana’s best player award.
Mark combined well with Richard and halfback Stanley James to clinch the win in front of Moresby North-East MP John Kaupa.
During the presentation ceremony, Kaupa commended both teams for displaying remarkable talent in the decider.
Kaupa said the reason Moresby North-East had two competitions was because of the huge interest from within the electorate.
Kaupa said they budgeted about K50,000 in cash prizes.
“We started our competitions during Christmas and we’ve come to the end,” Kaupa said.
“The Port Moresby Rugby League cannot accommodate all of us, so we decided to have these competitions in Moresby North-East.
“We had to continue till now because we want to show that there is a lot of talent in the settlements of Moresby North-East.
“We also have plans to see that Moresby North-East can also be an affiliate of the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League.”
