SETTLERS at Wara Kong Kong, 2km south of Vanimo, West Sepik province, are shocked by the brutal death of a mentally-retarded man.
The man identified by police as Casper Arnold, 30, of Osol village, Bewani, was hit on the face and parts of his body with bush knives and his body dumped in bushes.
Ward councillor Simon Wama described the killing as barbaric and was worried about the safety of settlers.
Provincial police commander Insp Michael Tilae confirmed the killing.
He said the man’s body was discovered by two women collecting firewood.
“The motive for the killing is unknown but we
believe he may have done something that offended the killers,” he said.
Tilae said police led by Wama and local youths recovered Arnold’s body on Feb 20.
He said police had received some information about the killing and were investigating.
Arnold’s body is being held at the Vanimo General Hospital, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Meanwhile, Tilae said two men were in custody after they were caught selling air-guns in Bewani.
He said the pair had smuggled the guns in from Indonesia and had been selling them in the area before police apprehended them on Wednesday.
Although not branded as lethal, thegun was “dangerous” and could kill if aimed at sensitive parts of the body.
The pair was arrested and charged with being in possession of dangerous weapons and they would appear in court today.
