IT’S time more men in Papua New Guinea start speaking out on women’s issues, Australian Governor-General Quentin Bryce said this week.

Speaking at a lunch hosted by the East New Britain Governor Ereman ToBaining Jr, Bryce said some barriers would be smashed if more men spoke openly about violence against women and human rights.

She said her visit also focused on health, education and human rights, issues that were close to her heart.

Bryce said the issues were serious and it took a leadership role to pick up and speak about human rights.

She also urged students at the Kokopo Primary School to value their education and grab any opportunity that came their way.

She told the students there was much support given to them which  reflected education in communities.

“You do not know how good you are until you have a go at it, then you will discover what your skills are,” she said.

She said the school should look at having some links with Australia to establish friendship to learn from each other.

She presented books to the school and planted a tree to mark her visit there.

The school’s deputy head teacher Mrs Mission assured her that Australian donations would be well looked after.
