DEMAND for information technology (IT) in the country is high due to rapid changes, BSP general manager for human resources Hari Rabura says.
She said it was shown by more than 1,500 participating in the bank’s IT open day in Port Moresby on Saturday.
“The event created an opportunity for everyone to come at once and so we were able to look at the areas that needed to be so we could get them onboard,” Rabura said.
“It helps us to know how much demand is out there in the market as we have seen that IT is a big challenge for every company.
“One of the facts with the country’s leading financial institution (BSP) is that almost 90 per cent of the transactions happened last year were through digital or internet banking.
“We are bringing in new people which will help us fill our vacancies, with some interviews already.
“The number we have today is much of what we created in our data base for future vacancies, meaning that people would be considered later on as well.
“We are bringing in anyone, as long as they have IT background regardless of what level they are in, to groom them to a certain level to be fitted into the competitive environment.”
Raiz Hussain, the head of technology operations, said they were building the capability of technology in response to changes throughout the Pacific and not only in PNG.
“That makes its services accessible to all public and help them understand what technology is in BSP.”
Agnes Somanuve, one of the participants, said that she had IT background and was really happy to take part in the event.
“Information provided cleared some of my doubts and cleared pathways for my career,” she said.
Jeick Resvo, also one of the participants, said he was privileged to attend the event not only to apply but asking questions that he needed answers for before applying.
“It depends on the qualifications, we have to be considered but such an event creates a greater opportunity for us to know about what actually the companies are looking for when recruiting.”
