BANK South Pacific (BSP) will introduce new products this year to address overcrowding at branches, chief executive officer Ian Clyne said yesterday.
Clyne said BSP had SMS messaging service coming up to advise if cheque books, KunduCards or loans have been approved.
This way, customers no longer have to queue.
Clyne said queues occur because more customers visit the branches rather than use the cheaper and convenient services.
Clyne also said the bank was now challenged with educating customers on its products such as mobile banking, SMS alert and internet bank so they did not have to visit the branch.
“With mobile banking, we have SMS alerts already available, so customers can sign up, and they can get an alert when their pay is in the bank.
“We are now trialling the customer queuing project in three branches in NCD – Waigani, Port Moresby and Boroko.
“We will have chairs so people will be able to sit down instead of complaining of fainting on the queues.
With the customer queuing system, it will give us vital information, such as:
n How long a customer waits in line
n  What services customers are coming into the branch for;
n  How long it takes a teller to serve a customer, so that we can actually measure the level of customer turnover they are actually having; and
n Tell us our traffic period – so from Monday to Friday, what are our busy days? What are our busy periods?
Clyne said the pilot project would go on for two months and  rolled out to our large branches and then into smaller branches.
Clyne said BSP has also developed a mobile banking solution called “wantok moni”, and its phone-to-phone so customers can make payments to non-banked people.
The “wantok moni” project has been successful and would be launched  by end of March.
