Buai as source of income is an excuse
The National,Wednesday 06th of February, 2013
SIR Winston Churchill once said “the road to
hell always begins with a good intention”.
If, in the name of sustenance and survival, we ignore the stench, filth and a host of health and environmental challenges, what other issues will our society wink at?
If our people think it is okay to sell and chew buai because it financially benefits a certain segment of our population, then one can easily apply the same logic to prostitution, gambling and nightclubs.
Do we legalise prostitution just because it is the only way a sex worker can earn an income?
Do we turn a blind eye on nightclubs, beer outlets and gambling houses because they are a source of income for some?
Good intentions are only part of the equation.
One must engage in healthy, clean and noble activities to achieve those intentions.
The uncontrolled sale and consumption of buai
is already crippling our urban areas such as Wabag, Hagen, Kainantu and Lae.
We must not let the buai culture bury our capital city and act to curb this unhealthy and filth-ridden enterprise.
The more one delays, the harder it will be to control it.
What Governor Powes Parkop is doing is the right thing.
