Buai warning for drivers
The National, Monday July 28th, 2014
MORE than 5000 pamphlets have been distributed to public motor vehicle operators and the public about the betel nut ban in Port Moresby,
National Capital District Commission deputy city manager Honk Kiap says.
He said the pamphlets containing warning messages about the ban on spitting and littering of betel nut on moving vehicles had been well received.
Honk said that followed the recent announcement of a partnership between the National Capital District Commission and the National Road Safety Council, “Bus drivers and crews are advising their passengers not to chew when boarding.
“And we are not only targeting vehicles but individual persons chewing while travelling in moving vehicles,” Kiap said.
He urged people chewing betel nut in private vehicles to have spittle bags or containers in their vehicles.
If they are caught spitting out of vehicles, people could be arrested and charged.
He added that the penalty across the board for spitting in PMV’s or private vehicle is K500.
“If you ignore the warning, then have K500 ready to make the spot fine,” Kiap said.
