SIXTY inmates from Buimo Prison in Lae received certificates last Friday after undergoing a two-week personal viability business scheme training.
The training was conducted by the Human Development Institute to get prisoners prepared for life after they have served their terms.
According to head trainer Paul Wiau, the institute had trained 600 prisoners since it started assisting Buimo prison in 2010.
“The training (is to) prepare inmates to re-integrate into their families and communities after their terms in the prison cease,” Wiau said.
He said since 2010, inmates had been returning to their communities but there had been no follow-up on the impact of the training on their lives.
Prisoners who attended the training said it was useful to them.
Senior Insp David Jeregari, on behalf of prison commander Judy Tara, challenged the inmates to apply what they had learnt when they leave.
Buimo Prison welfare officer Sgt Arnold Juwai told the inmates to put the training into good use what they had learnt.
