BUIN district administrator Peter Kamuai has commended Buin Urban Youth Association for staging its volleyball competition which ended with the grand finals and presentation of prizes on Sunday.
Addressing the players and officials before the presentation, he said the competition had helped address law and order issues in the town.
“As the district administrator, I want to express my happiness to the village communities in the town for staging this competition because while the games were in progress, there was an improvement in people’s general conduct,” Kamuai said.
“The town is ours and we must always work together to ensure that we continue to maintain and display the kind of attitude you showed during the games.”
Organised under the theme, “Balls for Bottles”, the competition was initiated by youths with the support of Kararu, Nakaro and Kuguiogu community leaders.
South Bougainville MP Timothy Masiu also supported the competition with K2,000.
According to Kararu village chief and major sponsor, Albert Nukuitu, a lot of homebrew equipment had been surrendered although there were more still to be handed over to the responsible authorities.
He said the competition was part of an ongoing efforts to rehabilitate youths through sports.
Nukuitu said efforts to eradicate homebrew would continue.
He hailed the association, youths and community for their support and good conduct which ensured a peaceful and successful competition over the past two months. Nukuitu vowed his continued support.
The association said it would stage another competition at the same venue.
Representing the Office of the South Bougainville MP, second secretary Chris Nawa told the youths that in order to be successful and progress to the next level, clubs must be sustainable
