Bulb onions rotting in the rain

BULB onion farms in the Laiagam district of Enga province have been badly damaged by rain in the past three months.
Farmers said damage was caused by water-logged soil making the onion stems to rot.
One such farmer is Joseph Wapen, of Niugu village. He said that unlike other cash crops, bulb onion required intensive labour.
Wapen spent K700 to plant three blocks of bulb onions.
The onions were five months old when it started raining.
“I do not know about other farmers,” he said.
“They have their own stories to share regarding their losses.
“We don’t know when the rain will stop.
“The rain is not only affecting our bulb onion plots, but other crops in the garden as well.”
Wapen harvested some onions and sold them for K2 a kilo at the Innovative Agro Industry fresh market at Taluma.
