MMJV Bulolo United registered their biggest win in Lae with a 5-1 drubbing of Petro Souths, while Besta PNG United came from behind to draw 2-2 with NBS Tukoko University in the Telikom National Soccer League challenge on Saturday.
However, despite an exciting double header at the Sir Ignatius Kilage Stadium, supporters, especially mothers and female fans had to call officials from the PNG Football Association and police to intervene and control some drunks who were intimidating those watching the games.
In the opening game, Petro Souths could not coordinate play well and their poor defence allowed their opponents to make inroads into their territory to score at will.
Souths goalkeeper Timothy Markmia had a busy day trying to block off continuous attacks by the Bulolo United led by lanky striker Yama Shong.
Bulolo United scored the first goal of the game when Clement Peka found the target.
However, striker Peter Tawelo levelled for Petro Souths with a strong drive from within the Bulolo United’s half.
The goal was short-lived when Peka picked up his second goal after connecting a perfect header from a corner kick to make it 2-1.
Realising the lapses in Souths’ defence, Bulolo United continued to push ahead and scored two more goals in a pace of one minute to Daring Edwin and Neimen Gwaitep.
Fatigue seemed to grip into the players but Bulolo United started to dictate and stabilise the game in the last quarter.
Then minutes later, Adrian Komu blasted a powerful shot that deflected from the cross bar and into the target to make it 5-1.
The second match started at a slow pace but the match intensified after University striker Kohn Liem scored the first goal to take an early 1-0 lead.
Russel Nirik found the target in to the 36th minute to head into the break with a 2-0 lead.
But it was a different ball game in the second half when Besta United lifted the tempo. They scored when Jamal Seeto tapped one past Tukoko University goalkeeper Marcelline Wagum after he ran out of his goal area to save the shot.
Besta United were not to be outdone and Roland Conn slipped another goal past Wagum to level the scores 2-2 at full time.
Besta PNG United will host MRDC Hekari United in Lae next Saturday. Hekari United are looking forward to avenge their first round defeat against Besta PNG. However, the onus is on Besta PNG to prove their giant killers’ tag.
Meanwhile, the PNG coach Frank Farina will oversee the second training camp for the national squad at the national soccer academy in Lae.
A final team will be named after the camp ends on Thursday.
