Maxie Eluida and Nancy Peter are returning home to do business after a financial training taught them new business ideas.
Milne Bay’s Eluida and Peter, from Central, were among 63 participants who graduated on Friday at Murray Barracks after a two-week financial training for army families.
The training was run by the Small Medium Enterprise Corporation (Smec) through the Women’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry for PNG Defence Force families.
“This training has motivated me to buy an additional and bigger boat than the one I currently operate to transport passengers from Misima to Alotau,” Eluida said.
“I have learnt that business is about profit.
“That profit must grow and only use the profit when necessary needs arise.
“I now know the right way of using money.”
Peter said she was going to the village to toil the land and grow sweet potatoes and vegetables.
“I used to think business was only in sewing and selling blouses and dresses,” she said. “This training has revealed to me that agriculture is money.”
The training was aimed at preparing participants for life in retirement.
Women’s chamber of commerce president Avia Koisen said the training was “a very powerful tool” to make it easy for women to run a business.
