THE PNG Chamber of Commerce and Industry is calling on the Government to place more emphasis on internal security, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic period.
This follows concerns over the recent attacks against individuals, communities, businesses and even police.
The chamber said it was gravely concerned about the apparent breakdown of law and order around the country, and called on the authorities to address the issue as a matter of urgency.
In Port Moresby, clashes between ethnic groups in the Badili-Koki area escalated recently, affecting residents who now feel not safe to move around.
In Alotau, an attack on a police barracks by armed men showed the lack of respect for the rule of law, instilling fear in law-abiding citizens.
There were reports of ethnic clashes in Mt Hagen, Western Highlands and Kainantu in Eastern Highlands, which affected business operations there.
There were also reports of violence in Porgera, Kokopo and other towns. The chamber said: “These incidents have had a negative effect on businesses.
“Many have been forced to shut down temporarily.
“The cost to businesses as a result of these incidents has been immense. Many businesses, not operating in fear of looting, stand to lose revenue, with their employees in danger of not being paid.”
