BUSINESSES in Papua New Guinea will be the first in the world to be able to monitor their contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with the launching of a comprehensive online data platform this week.
This was done through the partnership of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Business Council of Papua New Guinea to enhance sustainable growth, BCPNG president Robert Nilkare says.
“This is a global first. Papua New Guinea is leading the way in designing a methodology that maps private sector contributions to sustainable and inclusive growth in PNG,” he said.
“This initiative continues to place Papua New Guinea as an emerging global leader in sustainable development.”
UNDP resident representive Roy Trivedy said the partnership was important in achieving the SDGs as the private sector was a key contributor to poverty reduction.
“Business is the biggest driver of poverty reduction. Business are already contributing a lot,” he said.
“By harnessing their strength to create employment, wealth and solutions to local and global challenges, we will go a long way in achieving the SDGs.
“Following the experience of previous international goals and learning from their lessons we can only succeed when all partners are involved and this includes the private sector.”
The SDG dashboard will go online later this month and will continue to be developed with new companies expected to be added next year onto the seven already on the online dashboard.
