THE Papua New Guinea High Commissioner to Malaysia Peter Vincent has been welcomed by Malaysian businesses, community and official representatives in Papua New Guinea.

Vincent was hosted to a lunch yesterday in Port Moresby by Malaysia High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea Jilid Kuminding where he met representatives from Malaysian businesses and its community in Papua New Guinea.

Dato Tan Bing Hua of the Papua New Guinea Forest Sdn Bhd said: “We welcome you to Malaysia and we are honoured that your Government has chosen Kualar Lumpur as your base. Welcome to Malaysia.”

Vincent is designated to Malaysia but is also accredited to Thailand, Cambodia and Laos.

Jilid said Vincent knew Malaysia well and would foster a good relationship between the two countries.

“He understands us very well. I think he understands the economics of trade, particularly investment,” Jilid said.

“I look at him as the technocrat. He is also very much of the business side and I hope he would do a good job for his country and Malaysia.

“The trade is increasing so that means it’s very healthy.

“Our investments are going to be more and more.

“Our investors are looking at Papua New Guinea as well as a gateway to the region.”

Malaysia’s trade volume with PNG between January and November increased by 15.6 per cent from the corresponding period in 2014.

It was worth RM1.74 billion (K1.16 billion) – an increase of RM835.79 million (K557.8 million).

From 2010 to 2014, Malaysia’s total trade with Papua New Guinea steadily increased from RM1.12 billion (K0.74 billion) to RM1.7 billion (K1.13 billion) – an overall increase of 51 per cent. Malaysia’s exports to Papua New Guinea were valued at RM1.29 billion (K0.86 billion), an increase of 3.7 per cent from the same period in 2014, which show a strong trade between the countries.
