BUSINESS houses in East New Britain have been warned to seek police assistance when transporting large amounts of cash in the province.

Provincial police commander Superintendent Anthony Wagambie issued the warning following an armed robbery in the province.

“My appeal to business houses is that if they are carrying large amounts of cash, they must seek police assistance to ensure that their cash is transferred safely,” he said.

“Or if not, engage a reliable security firm, which provides armed escorts for this purpose.

“Criminals take advantage of situations where people are less security-conscious. Inside jobs are becoming too regular.”

Wagambie said armed robberies were becoming a serious problem in East New Britain.

He said three armed men held up a vehicle carrying cash for a contractor engaged on the New Britain Highway.

The thugs made off with more than K8000 and valuables. The matter was reported to the Kerevat police station.

Wagambie said Kerevat police had already arrested three suspects, one of them was an employee of the company who had boarded the vehicle at Kerevat.

He said police believed that the man was the one who planned the robbery.
