Businessman in court for ‘bribery’

A CHINESE businessman appeared in the Lae District Court yesterday charged with bribing a senior Customs officer.
The alleged incident happened last Friday.
Guang Lu of Fujian province in China, and the owner of Salu Investment Ltd, had imported into Lae port a 20-foot container which Customs suspected was undervalued with the use of false invoices.
Police documents tendered in court stated that he was alleged to have offered an “envelope” to Assistant Commissioner Customs Northern region Francis Nipuru.
Lu owns a chain of stores and bakeries in Lae.
Lu’s K5,000 bail has been extended and will appear for his committal hearing on April 11.
