Businessman urges AG to vacate office

A MADANG businessman and former politician has called on Attorney-General and Justice Minister Sir Arnold Amet to step down from office following his recent actions not fit for a national leader.
Following a full-page newspaper advertisement put out this week, businessman Peter Yama said yesterday Sir Arnold’s actions in recent days had made a mockery of the public office he holds as the people’s representative.
“Not only that, Sir Arnold’s full-page newspaper advertisement two weeks ago publicly apologising to another member of parliament is contrary to his preaching on integrity, good governance, truth, honesty, justice and respect.
“Without even acknowledging that what he had said at a public forum in Madang were his personal views, the advertisement indicated that what the national leader said and did then was the position of the national government.
“This is not good and I feel that he should relinquish his position as a national politician and minister of state,” Yama said.
“He should resign immediately or be dismissed as the attorney-general for embarrassing the government with his disgraceful conduct and behaviour.”
He also blamed the attorney-general for allegedly influencing acting Public Prosecutor Camillus Sambua to file a declaration withdrawing his lawsuit against Australian banker John Maddison.
However, Yama said he was seeking legal opinion and would soon refile the lawsuit.
Police had also expressed disappointment in the case and were understood to have revisited the case with the intention of going back to court.
