Busu Secondary School in Lae has opened a new senior science laboratory for grades 11 and 12 students last Thursday.
Principal George Nobel said the construction of the laboratory, at a total cost of K600,000, started in 2019 and was completed this year.
“We have also spent K350,000 from the savings of parents support fee to complete this project,” he said.
Nobel thanked the Morobe deputy administrator social services Robin Bazinuc for his team’s effort in doing regular checks on the progress of the building and the construction company, Milingseas Construction Ltd, for its effort.
He said the school changed its status from high school to secondary in 2006 but facilities such as a proper science lab were not given priority for the last 15 years.
“It’s my dream to have a science lab for upper secondary students because we want more practical lessons than theory and I believe this is the biggest science lab in the province and country because 70 students can do practical at the same time in the lab,” he said.
“We have three laboratories in the building for biology, chemistry, physics, a conference room, two toilets, teachers-in-service room, tools and apparatus room, chemical room, a science library and a student learning centre with e-library.”
He encouraged students to take ownership of the facilities and use them well for learning purposes.
Bazinuc said the country needed to provide a conducive learning environment to develop human resources.
“The right kind of infrastructural development is needed, the classrooms, the science lab, library, teacher’s houses, computer lab and learning materials.”
