Busy year for triathletes

PNG Triathlon Association has endorsed a busy 2014 calendar which includes 10 international tournaments.
Stephen Damien of PNG Triathlon Association said the running/cycling time trials will start next week on January 11, launching a busy 10 months.
“We also have a monthly triathlon series and then other international events as well. This is a great opportunity to set a running/cycling target over the next 10 months and work towards improving your times,” Damien said.
The first international tournament will start on March 14-16, Mooloolabah Trials then followed by Melbourne Ironmen on March 23.
Oceania will for the first time host a junior championships in Auckland, New Zealand in April then follow that up with Continental Cup in Suva, Fiji in May.
Damien said there are three international meets in June which include the Coral Coast in Cairns, Australia on the first week, followed by Cairns Festival on the second week with the Pacific Island championship in Guam in June 21-22.
Also in June 8, the famous Sepik Ironman is set for Wewak.
The Commonwealth Games on July 23 will see teams converging on Glasgow in Scotland.
Hopefully, PNG can qualify one or two participants in the triathlon event for the Commonwealth Games. Damien said the grand final of the International Triathlon Union will scheduled for August 31 in Canada before the world meets at the World championships, September 7. Damien said the PNG team will gear up for the National Triathlon championships in Wewak, ESP.
The championships is expected to draw teams from Tabubil, Manus, NCD, Kavieng and Wewak.
