SIX people were rescued by bystanders when flood waters took them by surprise inside their accommodation in Jiwaka last Monday.
They were three women, one an elderly, and three children.
Flooding in the area has been widespread as constant rain forced rivers and drains to overflow, destroying properties. Damage so far is worth about K50,000.
The Jiwaka Youth Organisation office hwas damaged by flood waters.
In the Anglimp-South Waghi electorate, the Kiam and Kumuga rivers burst their banks during heavy rain.
The president of the Jiwaka Youth Organisation, Gilbert Siki, said only one culvert drained parts of the two rivers and it could not cope.
Siki said the six people rescued were in the same building that housed the youth organisation.
“People did not know what actually happened when the level of the waters was rising up and covering the entire building,” he said.
“They were helpless and somehow it caught the attention of bystanders who risked their lives to rescue them.”
Siki said he lost equipment in the office worth K7000 which included chairs, computers and printers.
