THE National Airports Corporation (NAC) is looking forward to delivering the second phase of the Civil Aviation Development Investment Programme (Cadip 2) which focuses on making airports a business hub and upgrading rural airstrips, an official says.
NAC managing director and chief executive officer Rex Kiponge said during the opening of the Vanimo Airport terminal on Monday that five airports still under construction under the Cadip 1 programme were the soon-to-be-opened Kavieng Airport terminal, Mendi Airport upgrade, Madang, Tari and Wapenamanda.
“We look forward to Cadip 2 and we would like to continue this good working relationship with the national government, provincial government, Asian Development Bank and other development partners and key government agencies and contractors,” he said.
“Cadip 2 is more on-landing loan arrangement meaning NAC will be repaying the loan.
“Cadip 2 will address those airports that missed out under Cadip 1 with a strategic focus on transforming airports from point of transit to point of destination.
“We plan to invest more on airport infrastructure development that is encouraging non-aeronautical business activities at the airport so that when there are no flights, there is still business activities going on at our airport. Cadip 2 planning arrangement is well underway and we are confident to have this strategic move realised in 2023 or sooner.
“We will continue to work together with our development partners and key government agencies to pursue this initiative to provide sustainable airports and seamless travel experience for the travelling public.
“We will be working closely with the Rural Airstrip Agency, and the Department of Transport and the Civil Aviation Authority for improvement and upgrading under the Cadip 2 programme.”
