Call for basic services

Letters

The first blockholders of Kondopina in Western Highlands came from Chimbu and Enga and settled there.
Many of them migrated to settle in a new place to stay away from problems, tribal fights, sorcery, etc.
They initiated projects like schools where their children could be educated.
Health became another major concern which was later addressed, thanks to recommendations of employees of the Department of Primary Industry, now Department of Agriculture and Livestock.
From 1965 until now, government services, specifically water and electricity, have never been provided.
Our grandparents raised our fathers with water from nearby streams or rain.
Our fathers were raised under light from fires.
I grew up under lamps and candlelight.
Today, I raise my son under cheap imported lights and drink water from the same streams.
The community aid post went up in flames due to election-related issues many years ago.
There has been no replacement since to cater for the 4000-plus population.
Kondopina primary and elementary schools have sourced assistance from our elected MPs.
Our 25-year-old bridge over the Wahgi River collapsed earlier this month.
The livelihood of the people of Kondopina is in chaos.
Kondopina is in dire need of basic government.
I am speaking on behalf of the 4000-plus population of Kondopina.
I would like to appeal to Governor Pais Wingti and Dei MP Wesley Nukundj to hear our cries.
Please prioritise your 2018 budget for Kondopina, and see if you can connect electricity and water.
Our 53 years of suffering is enough.
It’s a new era.
Put yourselves in our shoes and see what it feels like to suffer for 53 years.
