Call fair and just

Letters

I SUPPORT Team PNG Chef de mission to the 2019 Pacific Games, Emma Waiwai, on her call to drop some teams which may not have fulfilled certain criteria set by PNG Olympic Committee’s justification committee.
It was reported in Friday’s newspaper that the men’s rugby sevens, men’s canoeing and women’s volleyball teams were dropped to either lack of funds or not fulfilling the criteria set by PNGOC’s justification committee.
Federations of different sports must learn from this and run their programmes well to pick the best in the nation to represent the whole of PNG and not just one city, or one association, as in the case in many years.
We have seen potential representative players in the nation being left out and a team in Port Moresby being selected to represent PNG. That is not fair.
It was also mentioned in the news article that PNG would not be fielding teams in badminton, lawn bowls and triathlon in the Apia Games.
The national federations of different sporting codes must learn and work to host national championships to select from a wider pool of national talent than putting together a last-minute team comprised of Port Moresby athletes only.
That call made by Waiwai was fair and just.
Let us not have individual associations taking ownership of sporting codes, particularly in putting teams together for international tournaments.
Let us be fair to all other athletes and officials too in the whole of PNG, and not only those in the main cities.
