Call for better design of drainage, culvert systems

City Manager Bernard Kipit says drainage and culvert systems in Port Moresby are designed by civil engineers to last for up to 20 years.
He told The National yesterday that any subdivision developers must make sure that drainage and culvert systems were designed adequately.
“Civil engineers design drainage and culvert systems to cater for major floods once every 20 year,” Kipit said.
“Between this timeframe, floods can be experienced due to unpredictable weather forecasts.”
Kipit said culverts could also be blocked by rubbish and eroded soil, and cause flooding.
He said Port Moresby had experienced a lot of rain recently with many parts of the city flooded.
He said settlement residents were vulnerable to flooding because there was no proper drainage system.
