POLICE in Western Highlands have been urged to improve their work ethic and be committed to their role as law enforcers.
Provincial police commander Chief Insp Jacob Kamiak said this during an Independence parade last Friday at the Mt Hagen Police Station.
Kamiak said it was important that officers considered the importance of their roles in society and strive to perform to a higher standard.
He said police officers needed to perform competently and efficiently in carrying out their duties in order to serve the public and maintain peace and order.
He said policing in Western Highlands had the challenge of keeping order and facilitating peace in the communities, especially during tribal fights.
“In order to handle these challenges, we have to start changing our ways of approaching our work and build good team spirit and unity,” he said.
Kamiak said police presence was needed in the communities on a daily basis.
He said it was needed especially during special days in order to give confidence to the people in terms of serving them and protecting them.
“Independence is a special time the country celebrates by looking to the past and appreciating the struggles and pain it took to come this far and as police officers we also need to make a change for the better, starting today.”
