THE Works Department in Chimbu has been urged to carry out regular maintenance of the roads.

Peter Pia, a civil engineer, told The National in Mt Hagen that sections of the road between Kundiawa and Koronigle in the Kerowagi district would continue to affect traffic flow.

Pia said the sections were affected by underground water and were unstable.

He said the continuous movement of big trucks carrying heavy machinery to the liquefied natural gas project in Hela and Southern Highlands every day had not helped.

“Works should establish a routine maintenance team in the province to work on the bad sections to keep traffic flowing,” he said.

“They should be checking on landslips, cracks, potholes and drainage,” he said, as sections in Kond, Wandi, Mindima, Nend, Teine Creek and Waigar needed urgent attention.

Pia said these sections needed gravelling instead of tar-sealing because tar would not last long in the area.

“Like in the past, the Works Department must set up its base along deteriorating sections of the road,” he said.
