Call to address law, order issues in Wau

Letters

I AM concerned about people’s lives in Wau, Morobe.
People in Wau live with fear because they think no one cares about them.
Law and order issues are on the rise in the town and rural villages even with police presence.
Activities such as producing homebrew, growing marijuana should be stopped.
People should learn to consume alcohol responsibly and stop being violent when drunk.
Every week there’s a killing in the town.
Almost all of the killings are alcohol-related.
A few good people are doing their best to earn their living by putting out market tables selling items but they are being harassed.
We have ward members here but they don’t want to risk their lives trying to stop such issues.
I believe the best way to address the issue is to:

  • BAN the sale and consumption of liquor – close down all bottle shops, monitor black markets, and track down home brewers and arrest them;
  • SET up a police mobile squad base in the town; and,
  • HAVE government and tribal leaders discuss and identify the causes of fighting and address those causes.

There are more than 50 church buildings in Wau town, but the community are not changing their lives.
