LAE city needs a designated area for a Remembrance Park to honour soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the country, a military officer says.

PNG Defence Force engineering battalion commander Col Peter Aimos raised the issue during the Remembrance Day anniversary dawn service at St Paul’s Chapel, Igam, on Wednesday.

“It is significant that our city council and provincial authorities set a park that will stand tall to remind, not only Lae residence but also our visitors daily of the horrors of the war and the blessings that come with peace,” he said

“Slowly the image of World War II is losing its sharpness and it is crucial to educate young people about the wartime history, and as a subject it can be revitalised in the school curricular at all levels.”

Aimos asked Morobe Governor Kelly Naru, who attended the dawn service, to provide a proper venue for such an occasion.

The realities of war can be shared not during remembrance services but promoted through poems, paintings and songs to young children in schools, colleges and in villages, he said.

“We have a duty to educate young people of our fore-bearers’ sacrifices, of our own people as well as our friends from other nations and opportunities that arise when we and our friends come together to remember their heroism.”
