Call to come down hard on officers

Letters

I AM pleased to see new cabinet made of vibrant elite bulk of Papua New Guineans.
The prime minister has spilt the Cabinet into two streams in which one is subject to report directly to him while the other to his deputy on a half yearly basis for the sake of check and balance on performance.
This idea will really put every department to work towards meeting targets and eventually all public servants from the national to the LLG level will really work.
If officers are not meeting targets they should be served notices through their respective superiors.
Furthermore, I appeal to the public service Minister to come down hard on provincial HR officers to promote merit-based appointments.
Most appointments are done through nepotism and it is crippling the public service machinery.
This area must be given priority for the benefit of the suffering Papua New Guineans.
Every successive government comes and goes but yet people continue to complain that services are not delivered as expected.
We won’t be surprised if this government will be just the same as previous governments if priority is not given to scrutinising the public service machinery.
In your good hands minister.

  • Wantokism and nepotism in appointments of public servants at the district and LLG level is crippling service delivery to the bulk of our rural populous.
