Call to stop dumping rubbish near drains to prevent blockage

NATIONAL Capital District Governor Powes Parkop is urging people not to dispose of rubbish along or near drains to prevent blockage during wet and windy days.
“Drainage are purposely built for removal of excess water either from the ground surface or caused by rainfall,” he said.
“People should use their commonsense, there are proper places to recycle rubbish in bins provided and not along the drains.”
Parkop said if small things were carefully taken care of, “we would not complain about pollution and destruction of properties caused by flood waters”.
One owner of a rental property at Morata Four complained about flooding.
Landlord Albert Kamani told The National that his property 200m from the drain was flooded.
He said it was not the first time as his rental rooms and backyard gardens had been damaged by floods since the construction of the Waigani-Morata-9-Mile-Gerehu road.
“I have written a claim to the NCDC engineering department in August to help me restore the damage but there has been no response.”
