Call to support democracy

Letters

WHEN we acknowledge the International Day of Democracy, it is important to review the state of democracy in poor countries.
Poor countries fail to implement democracy because there is a perception that their sovereignty will be interfered with and they lack commitment and the resources to fully implement democracy.
There could be some other obstacles that hinder poor countries from achieving democracy.
Poor countries should be supported to promote the rule of law at the national and international levels.
They have to be supported to ensure that there is access to justice for all and corruption and bribery are reduced.
Poor countries should be encouraged to develop effective, accountable and transparent institutions and ensure a responsive, inclusive, participatory and representative decision-making mechanism is maintained at all levels.
