PAPUA New Guinea Football Association (PNGFA) competitions director Paul Isorua says the decision to cancel the Women’s National Soccer League (WNSL) playoffs is final.
Isorua’s response came after Southern Conference winners Genesis appealed to PNGFA to overturn the decision.
In a letter to the club, Isorua said the decision to cancel the finals was made in consultation with the WNSL interim standing committee, PNGFA’s executive committee as well as the president and secretariat’s office.
“Your email and concerns raised through the formal letter has been well received,” he said.
“The decision to cancel the 2020-21 WNSL finals was made considering the factors mentioned in the circular dated April 29.
“(The factors) were imminent at that point in time as a result of the extended Covid-19 situation in the country.”
Isorua said the standing committee and his department made a formal submission to the Covid-19 Task Force Controller’s Office on April 6, however, they had not received any response to date.
“Another submission was sent out again in the recent past to the controller’s office through the PNG Sports Foundation pandemic management committee,” he said.
“(This was) to seek further information on the status of the submission made by PNGFA for its programmes in light of the approval granted for the Digicel Cup.”
Isorua said with no response to their submission for approval, “the decision to cancel the WNSL finals remains as is”.
