HUNDREDS of people from the Moge tribe of Western Highlands province gathered last Saturday with their leaders at Pou village in Mt Hagen to take part in a curse-breaking ceremony.
The ceremony was arranged by Western Highlands regional seat intending candidate John Piel and cost more than K20,000.
Piel, who is from the Moge tribe, decided he had to go back to his tribesmen and get rid of their differences and the curse that prevented his people from seeing good things happening in life.
Piel told his tribesmen that speaking and imparting curses on people were not healthy.
He said the Moge tribe had been cursed by the former governor, the late Raphael Doa from the Moge Nambuka clan.
He said Doa’s curse was to prevent any person from the tribe winning a seat in an election.
Piel said Doa had been unhappy at his brothers for causing him to lose his seat to Brian Kindilawi, who then lost to Paias Wingti.
He said through that curse Doa had removed leadership from them and given it to others.
“Many young men in my tribe did contest the elections but they never won.
“I, as an intending candidate must go back and do something to get rid of that curse before going into the election,” Piel said.
He gave K20,000 and seven pigs to the relatives and clansmen of Doa to remove the curse.
