A MAN believed to be part of a gang involved in a car theft was shot dead by police in Lae last Saturday.

Lae police operations commander Fred Kaiwa said the gang had stolen the vehicle at the main market area and drove towards Peter Block in Kamkumung when they were intercepted by police.

“Police providing security at the Polytech counting venue reacted to the situation and gave chase. They shot the suspect,” Kaiwa said.

The incident happened between 4pm and 5pm.

A relative of the dead man said they were confused as to what actually happened.

She said “we want some answers to give us some peace”.

“We are not sure what really happened.

“There is a lot of confusion at the moment. We were just told that his body was in the morgue,” she said.

Police are planning a week-long special operation starting tomorrow and have warned criminal elements to think twice before committing any crime.
