THERE has been an increase in car thefts in Port Moresby, according to Assistant Police Commissioner Jim Andrews.

He said police recorded the increase in the number of stolen vehicles in the city last week.

“The criminals are targeting drivers of CRV vehicles in the city,” Andrews said.

He said criminals were using guns to steal vehicles.

He said most of the car thefts occurred in the Gerehu suburb.

“I want to warn our drivers to be very careful,” Andrews said.

He urged motorists not to drive in isolated areas in Port Moresby.

“I have given specific instructions to suburb police station commanders to police their areas,” Andrews said.

Andrews said police were trying to find out where these stolen vehicles were taken to in the city.

“Police are now investigating whether the criminals convert the vehicles, or break them up and sell the parts,” he said.
