Catechists helped missionaries lay foundation: Leader

THE roles Catholic catechists played alongside the early missionaries helped lay the foundation for the church to flourish, a church leader says.
Bishop of Kundiawa Paul Sundu said this last week on the Feast Day of Blessed Peter ToRot at the Denglagu parish, Gembogl, Chimbu.
“Today we celebrate Peter ToRot’s day,” he said.

“A man who wanted to promote family life, who defied Japanese army orders during World War II in New Britain.
“He stood on his faith and allowed his blood to spill for PNG thus giving birth for a renewal of the faith.”
Catechist Theo Bare of Denglagu in his acknowledgement speech congratulated retired and serving catechists on the feast day.
Bare said catechists followed the footsteps of the missionaries in reaching out to communities.
“We the catechists hold the faith of the people together. We prepare the land where the priests plant the seed of faith through the sacraments,” Bare said.
