CATS look set to return to the winner’s circle after a string of three consecutive losses to the more superior teams in the past three weeks of the Moni Plus-sponsored Port Moresby Australian Football League competition.
They face Gereka Bombers in the match of the round at the Colts Oval on Sunday.
The Cats began the season on a high note, taking an easy 49-7 win over competition rookies Alavana Swans in the season opener four weeks ago.
But the perennial battlers found themselves going up against three top teams in their ensuing three games.
The 13 Plus Cats copped a 20-41 defeat by Bismark Maritime-sponsored West Eagles in round two and in round three, they suffered another humiliating loss at the hands of a star-studded Concept Koboni outfit.
In last week’s round-four clash with Dockers, the Cats lost focus on the game and bitterly surrendered under pressure football to a 25-42 defeat.
On Sunday, the last year’s losing grand finalists will be raring to prove that they still are a force with which to be reckoned.
Their opponents, Bombers are a team predominantly made up of volleyball converts who are still learning the trade of how to use both hands and feet to launch their attack.
Peter Keneke appears a standout for the Bombers but he will have too much on his plate against evasive Glen Saniong, Greg Ekari and Steven Iauve.
Experience brothers Unapo and David Yogomin, with Silai Mark, Jeffery Aihi and Peter Maoni, will provide an advantage to the Cats’ cause for victory.
But if the Bombers use their versatility and leaping power to their advantage, they could put the Cats under pressure to cause an upset.
In tomorrow’s showdown, the Swans will have much to learn from the experienced Eagles.
“Winning the match is not important to us at this point in time,” Swans president Ian Augerea said. “The important thing is to get our young players involved in sports to keep them away from anti-social activities.”
In the women’s matches, the Swans, Bombers and Cats will make their maiden appearances with Alavana taking on Eagles in tomorrow’s encounter while the Cats face Gereka.
In the main women’s match tomorrow, the Dockers will be eager to atone for last week’s 15-17 loss to the Eagles. The Dockers will face Koboni who will be led by the dynamic pint-sized Flames rover Vaine lai.
