BUBIA Lutheran Primary School at 11-Mile outside Lae ended their National Book Week celebrations with a programme on Friday which included library building, poetry recitals, quizzes, a spelling bee, and a debate.
Primary sectional head Solomon Nalong said the programme was designed to get students to value and appreciate the need for books and the knowledge they contained.
“We celebrated our National Book Week with activities involving every student, the activities were to encourage our students to read and see the importance of reading a book,” he said.
Nalong said the programme was to promote, encourage and engage children in reading books.
“Students want to take part with hands-on activity to showcase what they have in their mind especially writing poems, riddles and posters and put their work out for other students to see,” he said.
Nalong said reading helped the cognitive behaviours of children and broaden their minds to the bigger world around them.
He said the theme for this year’s National Book Week was “Choose your identity, read.”
“If you want to be a pilot, engineer or journalist it’s all in the books, reading books helps develop our minds and we are encouraging students to read a lot of books,” he said.
Grade 8 student Bonaventure Boaging, 12, said in one of his debated points that reading books helped builds comprehension.
“English is our second language so by reading books, we promote comprehension, build vocabulary, and enhance our imagination.”
