Cells undergoing refurbishment
SEVERAL steps have been taken by Eastern Highlands police looking into the refurbishment of the Goroka police cells after eight men escaped from there early last month.
Provincial commander Supt Michael Welly said he was liaising with the provincial government and Goroka MP’s office to help refurbish the cell blocks.
“This is so we can have a contractor brought in to ensure the cell block is refurbished,” he said.
Supt Welly said the inspection of the block revealed that the other cells had been made redundant because they were dirty and unhygienic.
“This has forced one cell block to be used by all male detainees, leading to overcrowding,” he said.
“These cell blocks have been a problem and overlooked over the years.
“We are working towards getting them fixed and we will be ensuring they are.
“We are still working around the clock to ensure that we capture the eight men.”
The eight broke out on the 18th of last month between 3am and 4am after ripping open roofing iron sheets and remain at large.
