A NEW vehicle assigned to the highlands provincial census coordinator sustained damage after it went off the road.
Police have towed the damaged vehicle back to the Goroka police station.
Goroka police said the vehicle slid off the road damaging its sides and rear lights.
Officers who went to investigate the accident said the driver did not have a licence and was under the influence of alcohol.
Police said the passengers were also drunk and found bottles of beer in the vehicle.
The vehicle is one of the seven new ones presented to the provincial census coordinators of the highlands region by former National Planning and Monitoring Minister Paul Tiensten in Goroka early this year.
The vehicle was purchased to assist in the census exercise.
Highlands provinces that received the vehicles were Eastern Highlands, Chimbu, Jiwaka, Western Highlands, Enga, Southern Highlands and Hela and Jiwaka region.
