THE Bereina Catholic diocese has been given a new vehicle from the Central provincial government.
The four-wheel-drive vehicle will serve the Tapini health centre in the Goilala district.
Bishop of Bereina Rochus Tatamai described the gift as a show of commitment and partnership between the church and the government.
He said the diocese would look after the vehicle.
He commended Central Governor Alphonse Moroi for honouring a commitment made in June.
Tatamai said the vehicle would be used for referral cases and medical deliveries for the centre “so long as the road is open”.
Deputy Governor Desmond Baira, who presented the keys on behalf of Moroi, said the provincial government was committed to service delivery and proud of what the Catholic church was doing.
He urged the diocese to take ownership of the vehicle and use it wisely.
Valued at K130,000, the vehicle will help more than 10,000 people and users of the Tapini health centre, officer-in-charge, Terence Oa, said.
Oa said the vehicle would enable them to conduct health awareness, patrols, refer patients, carry medical supplies and complete their health reports, some of the programmes that were not implemented because of the lack of transport.
